Day 1 of 30 Day Fashion Design Challenge:
Design a red carpet look for these 5 pre-chosen music artists for the 2012 Grammy’s.
Lady Gaga: For Miss Germanotta’s red carpet look I was inspired by the idea of the censor. Lady Gaga, as everyone in the world knows, has pushed the boundaries in ways that no one was prepared for when she stepped on the scene and she still does to this day. I am very much a proud Little Monster and to say that I am both fascinated and in adore with her style says the absolute least—she’s a visionary with her look. Her breasts are “censored” in a black sheer netted bodice with a boat neckline and reveals her back. The netting then follows to her waist and down to her legs, giving her plenty of exposure to show off her lovely tattoos. The black detailing is leather, along with the hot pink—a color that I’m not very sure fits the design but I decided to choose it anyways. The dress boasts a hot pink chiffon mermaid tail, a little nod to her mermaid self in the You And I video.
Florence Welch: Florence has one of the most beautiful styles out there right now. It’s vintage and ethereal and absolutely stunning, it’s completely her own. As I’ve been an obsessed fan of hers for a long time now and know her voice and music very well, I was inspired to design an evening gown that felt more like a futuristic, or modern, ethereal goddess. With fitted seams in every direction and diagonal for a sure fit and quirky detail, fitted long sleeves, backless detail, and a long soft white chiffon skirt, I imagine this dress to fit Flo’s whimsical personality. I made the bodice a mint color to compliment her pale skin and bright ginger hair that I adore ever so much.
Taylor Swift: If anyone has seriously engulfed themselves into the honest lyrics written by Taylor Swift, you’d know that she is every bit of a hopeless romantic. That sweet, soft romanticism is shown definitely through her country and down-to-earth style, but for my design I wanted to steer away from that. As one can read, I wrote “Nothing You Do Better Than Revenge,” which is a play on words from one of her songs. While still trying to keep it romantic, I wanted to create a form-fitting and back revealing gown that creates the illusion of curves for her very thin frame. I also chose this tangerine red to pop against her pale skin, and because red reminds of a siren. Basically, I designed it to be the gown Taylor wears that silently yet very loudly shouts “Fuck You” to every guy that has broken her heart. And to Camilla Belle. That bitch.
Beyonce: The Queen B gave birth to a baby girl early this year, who’s unique name served as the inspiration behind this design. Beyonce has a gorgeous curvy silhouette, so of course, I designed a fitted bodice that hugs her every move. I created a deep v-neckline for both the front and the back of the dress, blueprints do have to have some symmetry. As for the gathering of the many layers that make up the purple ombre chiffon mermaid tail, I wanted it to fall like the effect of an ivy flower. (Not the origin of the real name, but I can dream it up.)
Katy Perry: I wuv Kitty Purry. I’ve been in absolute head over heels in adore with her shape, style, and music since she first entered the scene with One of the Boys. Since she’s going through a divorce right now I definitely didn’t want to make her conservative but instead wanted to enhance her known features. (Hah.) I created X-style straps that begin at the sweetheart neckline and below the bustline there is a sheer cut-out exposing some skin. Along with a fitted bodice, I designed this dress with a “mullet” skirt that begins below the waist. I am a little embarrassed that the color is extremely, if not exactly, similar to a Grammy dress she’s worn in the past, but I initially chose the bubble gum pink to pay homage to her candy themed album, Teenage Dream, by making it the color of cotton candy. Nom on that.
I think it’s obvious I am obsessed with mermaid tails, by the way. Stay tuned, this is a 30 Day Challenge and I will update regularly. :)
I’m gonna miss class of 2012.
